Flax Seed Oil Dosage

Privacy policy

The recommended flax seed oil dosage will depend on several factors, including you age, physical condition, and diet. When it comes to fatty acids, keeping an appropriate balance of omega-3 and omega-6 seems to be more important than the exact amounts ingested.

Research indicates that eating four times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids is ideal. The typical United States diet tends to provide us with 10-25 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids. You ideal flax seed oil dosage will therefore depend on how your normal diet is constituted. (Within limits of course, no one benefits from drinking a bottle of flax seed oil a day to “neutralize” other fatty acids.)

If you are on certain medications or have any of the following conditions, you should always discus your flax seed oil dosage with your doctor. Adding whole or ground flax seed to your breakfast cereals is not dangerous, but ingesting large amounts of concentrated flax seed oil may produce adversary effects.

  • Oral medications. The absorption of oral medications can be slowed down by large amounts of flax seed oil if taken at the same time. Discus your flax seed dosage with your doctor to find a safe way of including flax seed oil in your diet.
  • Diabetes or schizophrenia. A person suffering from diabetes and/or schizophrenia may lack the ability to convert ALA into EPA and DHA. Such a person must instead obtain omega-3 fatty acids from sources that contain EPA and DHA, such as fish oil.
  • Macular degeneration. More research is needed before anything can be said for sure, but it seems as though high amounts of dietary ALA may have undesirable effects on macular degeneration
