Flax Seed Oil And Fertility
Very little is know about flax seed oil and fertility and more research is necessary before anything can be said for sure. What we do know it that keeping a healthy life style promotes fertility, while sticking to an unbalanced diet that leads to weight problems can hamper fertility. Obesity as well as underweight can cause fertility problems, and there are many fertility clinics that do not except obese or really skinny women for IV fertilization and similar fertility treatments because they know that the risk of failure is so great.
There exists plenty of anecdotal evidence regarding flax seed oil and fertility and there are several reputable research programs going on today that will hopefully shed some light on the link between flax seed oil and fertility – if there is any. What we do know is that a lack of beneficial fatty acids can lead to low sperm count and low sperm viability in males, and irregular cycles and conceiving difficulties in woman.
One of the reasons why researchers suspect that their might be a link between flax seed oil and fertility is that flax seed oil is rich in a type of essential fatty acids known as omega-3. Studies have shown that a normal United States diet contains 10 to 25 times as much omega-6 as omega-3, while the ideal ratio is four times as much omega-6 as omega-3. Studies have also shown that when a woman eats fatty fish during a pregnancy, it aids brain development in the foetus. This is most likely caused by the high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish. A problem with fatty fish is however that it often contains high levels of heavy metals, including mercury, which is very dangerous for unborn children. Flax seed oil is a safer alternative for anyone who is pregnant or is trying to become pregnant.
