Flax Seed Oil And Prostate

Privacy policy

A research team at Duke University Medical Centre has found some very interesting results in a study involving flax seed oil and prostate cancer. Lead study investigator for the project was Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, PhD, associate professor of urology at Duke University Medical Centre. The results were published in a medical journal named Urology in 2001 (Urology, 2001;58:47-52).

According to this study, there are some highly interesting connections between flax seed oil and prostate cancer, or more specifically: flax seeds and prostate cancer. Flax seeds in the diet seem to reduce both size and severity of prostate tumours. Flax seeds even appear to have prevented some mice in the study from developing prostate tumours in the first place. The mice in the control group ate a normal mouse diet without any flax seed and when they were tested, their tumours where twice as big as the tumours developed by the group who had been given a diet consisting of 5% flax seed. The tumours were also less aggressive in the group that had received flax seed. Flax seed oil and prostate cancer therefore seem to have a connection, and it is feasible that flax seed and/or flax seed oil could be used to prevent prostate cancer in the future. Flax seed oil and prostate cancer has truly been placed in the spotlight and are now the main actors in several ongoing research programs.

Flax seed oil is very high in ALA, a beneficial fatty acid. If you instead consume flax seeds, you will also get beneficial fibres and lignans (fibre-related compounds that seem to affect the hormone metabolism). Many people do however prefer to use flax seed oil, since it can be obtained in the form of easy-to-swallow capsules. It is still not determined whether pure flax seed oil has the same beneficial effects as flax seed oil ingested in the form of flax seeds.
